Intercambio is Spanish for Interchange; an exchange of ideas between other people, cultures, and societies, past and present. It is the opposite of “othering,” because when we interact with people who are different from us, we learn how much alike we actually are. Cultures around the world are coming up with viable solutions to problems Americans assume are “just the way they are,” including health care, work environment, family, agriculture…just about everything. Listening to others, to people not “just like us,” creates empathy, the ability to put ourselves in our neighbor’s shoes.
